Destinations To Avoid Due To Covid

BEFORE Covid-19 pandemic, tourism was big business, particularly for small island states, amounting to over 10% of global GDP. Thailand which used to be a leading tourist destination had seen a drastic drop in tourist arrival as a result of level 4 travel warning. To soften the blow, the country is promoting domestic tourism while providing soft finance to tour operators. Bali, which is another strong tourist destination according to data from statistics Indonesia shows a drop in foreign tourist arrivals from 6.2 million in 2019 to 1 million in 2020. Bali is currently at a level 3 travel warning. Other notable destinations with high-level travel warnings include;

  • Bahamas

  • Aruba

  • Lucia

  • Grenada

  • Fiji

  • Nevis

  • Albania

  • Kitts

  • Afghanistan

  • Belize

  • Isreal

  • Lithuania

  • Mauritius

  • Slovenia

  • Serbia

  • The U.S Virgin Islands

  • Romania

  • Ethiopia

  • Australia

  • Martin

  • Barthelemy

Travel warnings are categorized into levels:

Level 1 represented by blue means exercise normal precautions, level 2 is represented by yellow, meaning exercise increased caution. Level 3 is represented by orange and advice to reconsider travel while level 4 which is the highest and represented by red advises “Do Not Travel”. The U.S Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) also releases updated travel guidance every week. While these destinations are recommended that they be avoided, when unavoidable, be fully vaccinated beforehand to lower the risk of contracting COVID-19, keep updated on government and health regulations and advisories, as well as local guides.

2020 was a very tough year for travels and while it came with the fear of travel rate limitation post-lockdown, measures were taken to ensure the case otherwise. With the ever-changing barrage of government recommendations and countries restrictions, travelling became a daunting prospect making travel agents a more frequent option. However, while these restrictions and COVID-19 related travel conditions which will continue to complicate travels for the foreseeable future, are still in place, to make a more considered travel choice, people will need to be on the lookout for countries or destinations. According to statistics from TripAdvisor, 74% of travellers say they will spend more time choosing a destination this year 2021.

Faced with these practical obstacles surrounding travelling, here are also a few reasons to still go ahead and make a vacation trip;

  1. Travelling makes you miss and love home even home.
  2. It makes you create memorable memories.
  3. Travelling makes you quite the conversationalist.
  4. It improves your understanding of other cultures.
  5. It expands your social network.
  6. Travelling allows you to discover and try out new food.
  7. It helps you unwind from life stress.

COVID-19 has exposed the numerous fractures within the global system and every day there are news updates about them. However, travelling allows you to see the beautiful, diverse and imperfect world first-hand.
