US Warns Corrupt Nigerians of Visa Ban as UK Pushes Tougher Immigration Rules

September 23, 2025

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated its resolve to deny visas to corrupt, high-profile individuals, underscoring that the fight against corruption “knows no borders.”

In a post on its official X handle on Monday, the Mission stated:

“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving U.S. visas.”

While the statement did not name any individuals, it comes amid fresh allegations of financial misconduct against prominent Nigerians.

Sowore Petitions Florida Authorities Over Wike

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has petitioned the Attorney General of Florida, United States, over three properties he claims are linked to Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

According to documents cited by Sahara Reporters and other outlets, Sowore alleges that the properties one reportedly worth about $2 million were purchased with funds laundered from Nigeria during Wike’s time as a local government chairman in Rivers State.

Neither Wike nor the Florida Attorney General’s office has confirmed the allegations, and no U.S. or Nigerian court has ruled on the claims.

Reform UK Proposes End to Indefinite Leave to Remain

Meanwhile in the United Kingdom, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party has announced plans to abolish the current Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) scheme if it wins the next general election.

Under the proposal, migrants would no longer be eligible for permanent settlement after five years. Instead, they would need to reapply for visas with stricter salary thresholds, higher English-language requirements, and no access to welfare benefits.

The party claims the measures could save the UK £234 billion over several decades, though critics including Chancellor Rachel Reeves say the figure lacks a credible economic basis.

The U.S. warning sends a signal to Nigeria’s political elite that allegations of corruption can have international consequences, including restrictions on travel and access to foreign assets.

At the same time, Reform UK’s proposal reflects growing political pressure in the UK to tighten immigration controls, a move that could affect Nigerian migrants seeking permanent residency.
