Addressing scholars during a recent training workshop at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUTECH) on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, Prof. Ogunsola underscored the importance of reaffirming their commitment to the core objectives of academia.
“Academics and researchers in tertiary institutions must re-examine and recommit themselves to their purpose of joining the comity of intelligentsias,” stated Prof. Ogunsola.
Highlighting the workshop’s theme, “Strengthening University Culture: Making the Universities Great,” Prof. Ogunsola expressed concerns regarding the impact of government policies on academics in Nigeria over the years. Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by limited resources and adverse conditions, she praised the resilience of higher education institutions in the country.
“University campuses should serve as hubs for knowledge growth, necessitating collaboration between government and stakeholders to foster policies and infrastructure supporting innovative research,” she emphasized.

The Vice-Chancellor urged for a closer alignment between the education system and industry demands, advocating for faculty members to develop solution-driven skills to keep pace with evolving technologies reshaping the educational landscape.
“In the face of a more skill-driven industry, universities must bridge the gap by cultivating practical skills alongside academic certification,” warned Prof. Ogunsola.
Discussing the future of university education, she stressed the importance of creating safe and conducive environments for academics and students alike, promoting healthy competition, embracing joint degree programs, and supporting community engagement initiatives.
“These strategies are essential to meet the demands of an ever-evolving industry,” she remarked.
The workshop, hosted by Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUTECH), aimed to encourage academics to uphold the right values and foster a conducive culture within universities.
Explaining the selection of Prof. Ogunsola as the resource person, Prof. Odusanya highlighted her exemplary leadership and track record of excellence, particularly in advancing the UNILAG Future-Ready Agenda.
