UNILAG Research Conference Kicks Off With A Call For Social Purpose Of Higher Education

In a start to the 16th UNILAG Research Conference & Fair, Prof. Iain Gillespie, Principal of the University of Dundee, challenged traditional norms by emphasizing the importance of higher education in addressing social needs.

Speaking at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Prof. Gillespie in his keynote titled “Unlocking the Future: Rethinking Higher Education,” called on universities to adapt to the evolving landscape.

Prof. Gillespie noted that, “The University of Dundee, founded in 1883, recognized the importance of providing higher education for both genders, a move ahead of its time. It identified female education as a social need, producing Scotland’s first female university professor.”

While stressing the role of research in universities the don urged them to focus on answering social questions and equipping graduates to solve contemporary issues. This aligns with the conference’s emphasis on the social purpose of higher education.

The event, the first in-person conference since the 2020 COVID pandemic, features a fusion of the 16th UNILAG Research Conference and International Week, marking a significant development for higher education in Nigeria.

UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, commended the organizing committee and encouraged participants to share their knowledge for the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.
