UNIDO Laments As Less Than 30% Of  Nigeria Have Access To Water

In a compelling networking session spearheaded by Alga Africa Group’s member, Jos. Hansen, Dr Adekunle Olushile, a National Advisor of Investment and Technology at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), emphasized that less than 30% of  Nigerians have access to water.

“Residents in many areas lack access to clean, potable water,” remarked Olushile during the engagement. “To address this, I propose the government consider partnering with the private sector. Private entities are more result-oriented and efficient in delivering these critical services.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr Adebola Adedeji, General Manager of Jos Hansen, revealed an alarming statistic: access to drinkable water in Nigeria stands below 50%.

He stressed the urgency for government policies favouring private sector involvement to enhance water provision.

“Government cannot tackle this alone, especially given our challenging economy. Policies supporting and empowering the private sector in supplying drinkable water are crucial,” emphasized Adedeji.

Moreover, Adedeji highlighted a lack of utilization of skilled professionals in water engineering by the government, pointing out the need for a collaborative approach.

Chairman of Jos Hansen Nigeria Limited and Alga Africa Limited, Mr Des Braithwaite, emphasized the importance of government policies, especially economic ones, to foster a conducive environment.

He expressed optimism about networking opportunities, aiming to bolster support for the objectives of UNIDO and the Investment and Technology Promotion Office.

The call for collaborative efforts between the government and private sector remains a key focus, as stakeholders seek sustainable solutions to alleviate Nigeria’s pressing water accessibility challenges.
