The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has partnered with Renewvia Solar Nigeria to deploy renewable energy solutions across 25 of its branches in five states, in a move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and promoting environmental sustainability.

The partnership was formally launched on Wednesday at the UBA Oba Akran 2 branch in Ikeja, Lagos, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Svein Bæra, who later toured the inverter and battery installations with the Renewvia team.

The solar energy initiative, supported by Empower New Energy, a Norway-based renewable investment company, and Incremental Energy Solutions (IES), a Nigerian renewable energy developer, is expected to generate 152,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy monthly. The project will also cut the bank’s carbon emissions by over 89,000 kilograms of CO₂ each month.

UBA’s Deputy Managing Director, Muyiwa Akinyemi, said the initiative aligns with the bank’s long-term sustainability goals.

“At UBA, we believe sustainability is not just a responsibility but a key part of building Africa’s future. This project demonstrates how innovation and partnership can deliver lasting impact by reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner environment,” he stated.

The Managing Director of Renewvia Solar Nigeria, Adebowale Dosunmu, described the project as a milestone in delivering clean energy solutions to commercial and industrial clients in Nigeria.

“We are proud to support UBA’s leadership in sustainability and operational excellence,” he said.

Similarly, the CEO of Incremental Energy Solutions (IES), Oladipupo Omodara, commended the collaboration, describing it as a testament to Africa’s readiness to attract global clean energy investments.

“We appreciate the cooperation and proactiveness of the UBA management team whose support brought this partnership to life,” he said.

Empower New Energy’s CEO, Terje Osmundsen, said the project underscores the growing strength of Nordic–African cooperation in renewable energy development.

“This partnership reflects our mission to enable African businesses to access sustainable power through innovative financing,” Osmundsen said.

In his remarks, the Norwegian Ambassador, Mr. Svein Bæra, described the initiative as “a shining example of what can be achieved when African ambition meets Nordic innovation,” noting that it represents a shared commitment to sustainable growth and climate responsibility.

When fully implemented, the project will expand to 50 UBA branches across 18 states, representing 3 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar capacity and 7 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage.

The development reinforces UBA’s position as a leading sustainability-driven financial institution in Africa, while also aligning with the broader vision of the Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, who has consistently advocated for global partnerships that drive entrepreneurship, job creation, and inclusive growth across the continent.
