Transformer Explosion Kills Two Inmates, Injures Officials at Uyo Custodial Centre

November 14, 2025

A transformer explosion near the Uyo Medium Custodial Centre in Akwa Ibom State has left two awaiting-trial inmates dead and critically injured two correctional officials, according to verified reports from multiple news outlets.

The incident occurred along Metro Road, close to the Deputy Governor’s Lodge and the custodial facility. The transformer, which also powers parts of the Government House axis, reportedly exploded following a voltage surge. A second transformer on Effiong Udo Akpan Street by Wellington Bassey Way was also affected.

The Akwa Ibom State Controller of Corrections, Frank Okonkwo, confirmed the fatalities and extensive damage during a briefing with journalists. He said the inmates who were facing charges of conspiracy and kidnapping and armed robbery but were yet to be convicted were thrown off their seats by the force of the explosion.

They received first aid from the custodial centre’s medical team and were rushed to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), where they were later pronounced dead.

“It was a big loss, both to the victims and to the entire facility,” Okonkwo said, describing the incident as “very unfortunate.” He added that the families of the deceased had been contacted, with one family already completing the process to retrieve the remains pending the conclusion of investigations.

According to Okonkwo, officials of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) attributed the explosion to excessive voltage. The surge destroyed electrical appliances across the custodial centre, including computers, staff quarters, and the residence of the officer in charge.

He revealed that the transformer had experienced a similar fault a few years earlier and urged relevant authorities to urgently replace or overhaul the equipment to prevent another tragedy.

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NcoS) has launched an internal investigation through its legal department to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess whether lapses in maintenance or power supply contributed to the explosion.

In the wider aftermath, Okonkwo said the Command would continue its rehabilitation initiatives, including a planned empowerment programme aimed at providing vocational “start-up packs” for inmates who have completed skills training across facilities in Uyo, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene, and Eket.

Authorities say the injured officials remain under medical care. Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
