Tottenham Hotspur Sack Postecouglou 16 Days After Europa League Triumph

June 6, 2025

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on Friday announced the sacking of Ange Postecouglou 16 days after the Australian led the Lillywhites to European triumph.

Spurs have not tasted victory in the final of any Cup game nor won the Premier League since their 2008 Carling Cup (now Carabao Cup) title.

Postecouglou who arrived the north London club from Celtic FC in the Scottish league stayed unequivocally that he wins title in his second season at any club he coaches.

That came to pass as he led the team to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final of the Europa League on May 21 but despite the victory in the second tier European clubs competition, they had an underwhelming season in the Premier League as they finished in 17th place, just a place above the relegated teams.

An excerpt from a statement issued on Friday by the club stated:

“While winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.

Meanwhile Postecouglou who has been linked with a move to Manchester United released his own statement through his agency, CAA Base, following his sack by the Daniel Levy-owned club.

“When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham, my overriding emotion is one of pride,” Postecouglou said.

“The opportunity to lead one of England’s historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.

“That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.”

The Aussie added that the foundations already laid at the club means that they will not have to wait for another 17 years for a title.

Transfer speculation are rife that Spurs have former Barcelona midfield maestro and head coach Xavi Hernandez in their sights.

Spurs had their worst season in the just concluded 2024/2025 season finishing 17th on the log after losing 22 of their 38 matches.
