1. APC’s Okpebholo Wins Edo Gubernatorial Election

Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has emerged the winner in the Edo State governorship election which was held on Saturday.

According to the results from 18 local government areas (LGAs) announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, Okpebholo emerged winner after securing a total of 291,667 votes as against his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 247,655 votes. 2. Peg FX Rate At N1,000/$ For Cheaper Petrol, Crude Refiners Urge Nigerian Govt

Crude oil Refiners Association of Nigeria (CORAN) has called on the Nigeria government to peg foreign exchange rate at N1,000 per dollar to bring down the price of petrol from Dangote Refinery to below N600 per litre.

CORAN spokesperson, Eche Idoko, made this appeal in light of the recent surge in petrol prices, which have risen to between N950 and N1,100 per litre across the country.

3. FG May Increase Tariff as Monthly Electricity Subsidy hits N181bn

There may be an increase in tariff following the rise in the electricity tariff shortfall otherwise known as subsidy for electricity customers on Band A feeders

According to reports, electricity subsidy to be paid by the Federal Government rose from N102.30bn in May to N181,63bn in September.

4. DSS Release Six Hunger Protesters, to Arraign Three

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released six of the #EndBadGovernance protesters who were arrested during demonstrations in Kaduna State.

According to sources within the DSS, the six protesters were released following the completion of investigations, while three others would be arraigned.

5. Joshua Vows to Keep Boxing Despite Loss to Dubois

Former two-time heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua has vowed to keep boxing despite his defeat to Daniel Dubois on Saturday in London.

The British-Nigerian boxer was thrown to the ground for the first time after Dubois landed a strong left jab on him at the end of Round 1.

6. Tinubu Congratulates Okpebholo over Victory

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo over his victory at the Saturday’s Edo State governorship election.

President Tinubu said that the victory showed the people’s support for the the ruling party, APC, its progressive ideals, its economic reengineering programme and its commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

7. Zelensky Arrives US to Explain war Plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the US state of Pennsylvania on Sunday in order to explain Kyiv war plan to President Joe Biden, as well as to Vice President Kamala Harris and, separately, to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

In a video from a plane en route to Pennsylvania, he said: “Ukraine will present the victory plan in the United States, and the President of the United States will be the first to see it in full.”

8. Enugu Rangers Eliminated from CAF Champions League

After losing 3-1 away to Angolan club Sagrada Esperanca on Sunday, Enugu Rangers were eliminated from the CAF Champions League, leaving Nigeria with no representative in the group stage.

Nigeria has competed four times in the Champions League but never made it to the mini-league where prize money for qualifiers this season kicks in at $800,000 (715,000 euros).

9. LUTH Launches first Bone Marrow Transplant Programme for Sickle Cell Patients

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has successfully launched a bone marrow transplant programme for people with sickle cell disease (SCD).

This new programme which happens to be the first locally available bone marrow transplant programme for treating sickle cell disease in the country would allow people with SCD to locally access a bone marrow transplant via a procedure that involves replacing the patient’s diseased stem cells with healthy ones from a matched family donor.

10. NIHSA Warns of Severe Flooding Amid Rising Water Levels along River Benue Basin

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned states along the River Benue Basin of severe flooding amid rising water levels.

The agency revealed “alarming” water levels at its gauge stations along the River Benue Basin in Wuro Boki and Jimeta Bridge in Adamawa State (North-central), Ibbi Station in Taraba State (North-east), Makurdi in Benue State (North-central) and along River Niger in Lokoja, Kogi State (North-central).

11. Group Advocates Passage of Gender, Equal Opportunity Bill

The UN Women Political Participation Partners Working Group, in conjunction with the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has called for the passage of Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill in order to enhance women’s participation in politics.

This call was made during a one-day stakeholder meeting in Abakaliki.

12. Tinubu Assures That Nigeria will Intensify Efforts to crackdown Transnational Car Thieves

President Bola Tinubu has assured that Nigeria will intensify its efforts in cracking down transnational car thieves and making sure they are striped of the benefits of their illegal activities.

He assured that Nigeria will continue to work with international partners to achieve this and urged security and law enforcement agencies—including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), to intensify efforts in cracking down on individuals in possession of and trafficking in stolen vehicles.

13. PDP Members Protest Outcome of Kwara Council Polls

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have protested the outcome of local government polls held in Kwara State.

According to them, the results were fake as candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were declared winners of the chairmanship and councillorship seats by the state Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC).

He said: “It is an error when a Christian believer uses his acting gift which is meant to glorify God to satisfy self in secular movies. It is a waste of heavenly investment.”

15. Adamawa Government Confirms Cholera Outbreak

The Adamawa State government has confirmed that there is a cholera outbreak in the state with 12 confirmed deaths.

This was confirmed by the Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwami in Yola, the state capital.

16. Falana Seeks Information On Dates for Completion of Warri and Kaduna Refineries

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has written to the Managing Director of SAIPEM Contracting Nigeria Limited, an Italian engineering company seeking information on the completion dates of the rehabilitation projects for the Warri and Kaduna refineries.

He said that the contract awarded in April 2021 to the company by the Federal Government of Nigeria with projects divided into three phases, was expected to be completed within 21, 23, and 33 months, respectively and was valued at $1.5 billion.

17. 2 Arraigned in court over Theft Of Tomato, Pepper, Onion

The Ekiti State Police Command has arraigned two men identified as Ahmed Tosin (22) and Ajayi Aderemi (36), in a magistrates’ court sitting in Ado-Ekiti over alleged theft of tomatoes, pepper and onion.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, had told the court that the suspects were arrested for stealing two baskets of tomatoes, okro, pepper and onion valued at N40,000; property of one Mrs Ayegbusi Rashidat, on September 18, at the Enu Odi Market, Odo-Ado, Ado-Ekiti.

18. Vigilantes Arrest Bandits’ Informant Disguised as Madman

Vigilantes have arrested a suspected bandits’ informant who disguised as a madman in Kagarko town in Kagarko LGA of Kaduna State.

According to a the suspect was arrested on Thursday at about 2pm after he was trailed by the vigilantes while making a phone call. He added thatthe suspect was always walking the streets in tattered clothes which made some of the residents to suspect him.

19. Federal University of Agriculture Set to Take off in Bayelsa

The Federal University of Agriculture is set to take off soon in Basambiri, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State as renovation work is almost completed.

This was made known during a visit by the principal officers of the newly approved university led by its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing board, Senator John Brambaifa and Vice Chancellor, Prof. Reginald Keremah, at the weekend.

20. Drug Trafficker Excreted 76 Cocaine Pellets after Arrest by NDLEA

Nigerian drug trafficker, Okafor Ifeanyi Anthony, has excreted 76 cocaine pellets weighing 1.267 kilogrammes after his arrest at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The 38-year-old was arrested while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight en route to Iran via Doha on Sunday, 15th September 2024.
