Tinubu Reappoints Kyari As NNPCL CEO, Appoints New Board Members

President Bola Tinubu reappoints Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari as the CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and as announced the appointment of new board members.

This decision, alongside the formation of a new board and management team, underscores a vision for continuity and adept leadership in the nation’s critical oil sector.

The  reappointment of Kyari, a figure who has steered the NNPCL through a challenging period, highlights Tinubu’s trust in his leadership capabilities. Despite expectations for a change in leadership, Tinubu’s decision indicates a belief in Kyari’s proficiency to navigate the complexities of the global oil economy.

The announcement brings a diverse array of seasoned individuals into key positions. Chief Pius Akinyelure’s appointment as the Non-Executive Board Chairman adds depth with his extensive experience in the oil sector. Alhaji Umar Isa Ajiya’s continued role as the Chief Financial Officer ensures stability in financial decision-making crucial for NNPCL’s strategies.

The President’s reshuffling extends further with the addition of  Non-Executive Directors: Mr. Ledum Mitee, Mr. Musa Tumsa, Mr. Ghali Muhammad, Prof. Mustapha Aliyu, Mr. David Ogbodo, and Ms. Eunice Thomas. Their combined expertise is poised to bolster the board’s effectiveness.

According to presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, the appointments align with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, emphasizing a commitment to regulatory compliance and due process.

In a statement, the President emphasized his administration’s mandate for performance-driven outcomes, envisioning an energy policy that maximizes existing oil and gas resources while positioning for the exploration of innovative, cleaner energy alternatives.

“The appointments reflect the careful consideration of expertise and experience required to propel Nigeria’s energy sector forward,” Tinubu asserted. “Our focus is to harness current resources while pioneering sustainable energy sources for the future.”

This reshuffle not only signals a commitment to continuity but also underscores the administration’s forward-thinking approach towards Nigeria’s energy landscape, setting the stage for initiatives under the leadership of the appointed team.
