Tinubu Meets With President Jinping In China, Strengthens Nigeria-China Relations

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, marking a significant step in the relationship between Nigeria and China.

During the meeting, both leaders announced the elevation of Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, which aims to deepen economic ties and foster mutual growth.

“This is an important visit for Nigeria and the rest of Africa,” Tinubu stated, expressing gratitude for the warm reception he received in China. “Relations between China and Nigeria have indeed lasted for over half a century and should be further strengthened to advance our trade and economic development programs.”

Focus on Economic Reforms and Growth

President Tinubu emphasised the alignment between Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms and China’s development model.

“We believe that President Xi has demonstrably reformed the Chinese economy, and our reform program in Nigeria is on a similar course. I am a reformer with verifiable antecedents,” Tinubu said.

He assured President Xi of Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable growth, highlighting ongoing efforts to reform tax, tariff, and various other segments of the Nigerian economy.

“We have recognized the need to reform our economy, and we are doing so diligently,” Tinubu continued. “Trading and investment partners will have easy access to bring in their investments and seamlessly take their resources out.”

China’s Commitment to Nigeria and Africa

In response, President Xi Jinping acknowledged the longstanding ties between the two nations, noting the strong mutual understanding that has been built over the past 50 years.

“China and Nigeria, as major developing countries, strengthening strategic coordination, will inject fresh impetus to China-Africa relations in the new era,” Xi said. He emphasized the importance of unity and win-win cooperation in the partnership.

The Chinese leader also highlighted the upcoming 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit as an opportunity to further consolidate the relationship between China and Africa.

“China and Nigeria will continue to work closely within the FOCAC framework, serving as a model of cooperation between nations,” Xi pledged.

Implications for West Africa

The elevation of Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership is expected to have broader implications for the West African sub-region.
