President Bola Tinubu has given his approval of the appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a four-year initial term that is renewable.

The appointment which is subject to Senate confirmation, was announced in a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale on Thursday.

It said: “Mr. Olukayode’s appointment follows the resignation of the suspended Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.”

Olukoyede is a lawyer with more than 22 years of experience working as a regulatory compliance consultant and as a fraud management and corporate intelligence expert.

Having previously held the positions of Secretary to the Commission (2018–2023) and Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman (2016–2018), Olukayode has a wealth of experience in the management of the EFCC. He thereby satisfies the legal prerequisite for appointment to the position of EFCC Chairman.

In addition, President Tinubu gave his blessing to Mr. Muhammad Hammajoda’s appointment as the EFCC Secretary for an initial term of five years that is renewable, subject to Senate approval.

Hammajoda holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri. He is a public administrator with vast experience in managing public finances.

He began working for the Federal Polytechnic in Mubi as a lecturer. He then entered the banking industry, working successfully for the now-defunct Allied Bank and Standard Trust Bank.

A newly reenergized war on corruption waged through a reformed institutional architecture in the anti-corruption sector remains a central pillar of the President’s Renewed Hope agenda, and the president charged the new leadership of the commission with demonstrating the grounds upon which they had been granted the trust placed in them in this crucial national assignment.
