Things to Know About Linda McMahon, Trump's Pick For Education Secretary

Linda McMahon has been a significant figure in Donald Trump’s inner circle, serving in his first administration and supporting his campaigns.

Now, Trump has nominated her to lead the Department of Education, a move raising questions about her transition from business to government.

Linda McMahon’s Path from Wrestling to Politics

Linda McMahon first gained prominence through her work with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), a company she co-founded with her husband, Vince McMahon. The McMahons turned WWE into a cultural phenomenon, blending sports and entertainment in a way that captivated millions worldwide.

In 2007, McMahon and Trump crossed paths publicly at WrestleMania. Trump even participated in a scripted WWE feud, famously shaving Vince McMahon’s head in the ring.

After stepping down as WWE’s CEO, Linda McMahon transitioned into politics. She ran for the U.S. Senate twice in Connecticut, losing both races. However, she continued her political journey, contributing significant financial support to Republican candidates, including $6 million for Trump’s 2016 campaign.

A Background in Education

Though McMahon’s name is more associated with business than education, she once aspired to become a teacher. “Teaching was my first career goal,” she told lawmakers when appointed to the Connecticut Board of Education in 2009.

McMahon has also served as a trustee at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. She has expressed her support for charter schools and school choice, positions aligned with conservative education policies.

Despite her limited involvement in education policy, her nomination has sparked debates. Critics question whether her experience in business and government will translate to effective leadership in education.

McMahon’s Role in Trump’s First Administration

McMahon led the Small Business Administration (SBA) during Trump’s first term, overseeing disaster relief and loan programs for entrepreneurs. Her tenure earned bipartisan praise. Senator Richard Blumenthal, one of her past political opponents, called her “a person of serious accomplishment,” while Senator Chris Murphy described her as “talented and experienced.”

Trump lauded her contributions to his administration, stating, “She has been a superstar. I knew she was good, but I didn’t know she was that good.”

Unlike many of Trump’s appointees, McMahon managed to avoid scandals and controversies during her time at the SBA, focusing on promoting Trump’s trade and tax policies.

Continued Loyalty to Trump

Even after leaving the administration in 2019, McMahon remained a vocal supporter of Trump. She chaired America First Action, a super PAC that backed his 2020 reelection bid, and later helped establish the America First Policy Institute to promote his agenda.

As co-chair of Trump’s transition team for the 2024 election, McMahon has been instrumental in shaping plans for his next administration. This includes supporting Trump’s controversial proposal to dismantle the Department of Education, which he claims will give more power to states.

A Challenging Task Ahead

If confirmed, McMahon faces significant challenges as Trump has vowed to eliminate the very agency she would lead. “She will play a key role in restoring local control over education,” said a senior Trump advisor. However, dismantling the Education Department would require congressional approval, making it a contentious and potentially lengthy process.

While some question her qualifications, McMahon’s allies emphasise her business acumen and loyalty to Trump’s vision. “Linda understands the importance of results and accountability,” a source close to Trump stated.

Linda McMahon’s journey from the world of wrestling to the political arena highlights her adaptability and resilience. As Trump’s pick for Education Secretary, she stands at the centre of a debate about the future of education in America. Whether she can navigate this new role and deliver on Trump’s promises remains to be seen.
