‘The Marvels’ Hits All Time Low With $197 Million In Global Box Office

‘The Marvels’ Hits All Time Low With $197 Million

‘The Marvels’ has officially claimed title of the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), gaining just $197 million globally after four weeks in theatres.

This performance comes despite the film’s $220 million-plus budget, putting it at a potential loss as it nears the conclusion of its box office run in December.

The downward trajectory for ‘The Marvels’ was evident from the start, with it’s $46 million domestic debut on Nov. 10—the worst in MCU history.

Subsequent weeks witnessed a staggering 78% decline in ticket sales, solidifying its place in history with the biggest second-weekend drop in the franchise.

What makes this downturn even more noteworthy is that ‘The Marvels’ is the first Marvel film to fall short of the $100 million mark domestically, marking a stark departure from the success of its predecessor, ‘Captain Marvel.’ Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, attributes the film’s underwhelming performance to pandemic-related production challenges.

As ‘The Marvels’ approaches the end of its theatrical run, it falls short of surpassing the 2008 entry, ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ which previously held the record for the lowest-grossing MCU film.

This disappointment stands in stark contrast to Marvel’s otherwise stellar track record, boasting a global revenue of $29.8 billion across 33 films.

While some analysts dismiss the idea of superhero fatigue, pointing to recent hits like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and the anticipated success of ‘Deadpool 3,’ ‘The Marvels’ underscores a shift in fan interest when it comes to comic-inspired stories from Marvel Studios.
