Victor EzejaThe Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), says 120 Megawatts (MW) has been added to the national grid, in a move aimed at boosting electricity supply across the country.
This came as TCN successfully energised two newly installed power transformers at its 330/132/33 kilovolts Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation in Kebbi State.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelTCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, who made this known in a statement on Sunday, said the 100 megavolt-amperes (MVA) and 150 MVA transformers were energised at 1:18 pm and 2:56 pm, respectively, on Friday, 27 June 2025.
According to Mbah, the installation of the additional transformers has increased the substation’s capacity from 300 MVA to 450 MVA.”As a result, the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company now has an additional 120 MW of bulk power for distribution to its customers across Kebbi, Sokoto, and surrounding areas.”

She revealed that this development also enables TCN to maintain normal bulk power supply to Niamey, Niger Republic.
“We are committed to the continued expansion and maintenance of the nation’s transmission system to ensure a more effective and efficient bulk power transmission nationwide,” Mbah added.
Prime Business Africa reports that Nigeria has experienced incessant power grid failures over the years, often throwing a significant part of the country into blackout, forcing businesses to incur significant losses and high energy costs.
Nigeria’s electricity generation hovers around 5,000 megawatts, even as industry experts say it is far from the ideal energy demands in the country to drive industrialisation.
