Awoniyi, who has had to play second choice to Chris Wood this season, had barely been on the pitch for five minutes after he was brought on from the substitute bench in place of Ibrahima Sangare.

Nottingham Forest owner, Evangelos Marinakis, had marched onto the pitch in the aftermath of the injury to the 27-year-old Nigerian and the dropped points.

“Everybody – coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself – we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgement on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game,” Marinakis said in an Instagram post afterwards.

“This is natural, this is a demonstration of the passion we feel for our club.”

Awoniyi has scored just once this season in the Premier League in 25 league games.

The former youth international had played as a substitute in 22 of those game and had chalked up a total of 390 minute of league action.
