Nigeria plumetted in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday despite the perfect start to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with wins over Sierre Leone and Sao Tome and Principe reports Prime Business Africa.

Last month, the three-time African champions were the third best ranked team on the African continent and 30th in the world but have gone one place behind as they are now fourth in Africa and 31st in the world for the month of June 2022.

The Super Eagles’ defeats to Mexico and Ecuador in the international friendless prior to the Nations Cup qualifiers seemingly affected the team’s latest classification by the world’s football ruling body.

African champions Senegal continues to top the ranking table in Africa with Morocco in second place. Tunisia, who defeated Nigeria in the round of 16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon has taken up the place of the Super Eagles.

Brazil retain their place at the top of the standings, having replaced Belgium in March.

Belgium, Argentina, France and England make up the top five best ranked teams in the world for the month of June.
