Nigeria government says about ₦108 billion has been disbursed to over 600 students in various tertiary institutions across the country under the Student Loan Scheme.
President Bola Tinubu made this known on Saturday, 1 February 2025, during the 33rd convocation ceremony of the Federal Universal of Technology, Minna, Niger State.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelTinubu, who was represented by Mr. Hajayi Rakiya Gambo Ilyas, a director at the Federal Ministry of Education, said over ₦940 billion has been earmarked for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) in the 2025 budget.
“We remain resolute in addressing challenges in the education sector, including ensuring industrial harmony in universities,” the president stated.
“You have been equipped with knowledge and skills to innovate and contribute to society. Let integrity, resilience, and purpose guide your endeavours. Aspire to greatness, avoid vices, and make Nigeria proud.
“Let us remain united in our shared vision of a prosperous, united, and resilient Nigeria,” he added.
The president urged universities to align with industries to bring innovative research for societal needs.
Nigerian Education Loan Funds (NELFUNDS) was signed into law on 3rd April 3024 by President Tinubu. It was a historical step towards ensuring sustainable higher education and functional skill development for Nigerian students.
The primary objective of NELFUND is to provide financial support to qualified Nigerians for tuition and other fees, charges and upkeep during their studies in approved tertiary academic institutions and vocational and skills acquisition institutions within Nigeria.
Tertiary Institutions whose students benefited so far
Tertiary institutions whose students have benefited from the scheme include; University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), University of Ibadan (UI), University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), University of Benin (UNIBEN), Federal University of Duste, Bayero University, Kano, and Federal College of Education, Abeokuta.
Others are Federal University of Technology, Minna, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Federal Polytechnic, Ilero, University of Lagos, University of Jos, Federal College of Education, Gusau, Federal College of Education, Oyo, Federal University of Duste, Federal University of Birnin, Modibbo Adama University, Adamawa, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, and Federal Polytechnic, Mubi.
