Shanahan University: Archbishop Okeke Approves 50% Slash In Tuition Fees, As School Matriculates 496 Pioneer Students

Proprietor and Chancellor of Shanahan University, Onitsha, Anambra State, Archbishop Valerian Maduka Okeke, has approved 50 per cent slash in tuition fees as scholarship award to the pioneer students of the institution.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Rev. Fr Prof. Obi Oguejiofor, made this known in his remarks during the maiden matriculation ceremony of the institution on Saturday, 1st March 2025.

Not less than 496 students matriculated on Saturday at the Shanahan University founded by the Onitsha Catholic Diocese.

The Vice Chancellor applauded Archbishop Okeke for the gesture and urged the students to reciprocate by exhibiting good character and hard work while in the school.

The matriculation ceremony was held at the Basilica Square of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Onitsha.

In his homily titled “Going to the Promised Land,” Archbishop Okeke, who is also the Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical province, urged students to embrace faith, hard work, and discipline as they embark on their academic journey.

Since it was launched in October 2024, Shanahan University Onitsha, has increased from 19 to 24 programmes, reflecting the university’s rapid expansion, according to the Vice Chancellor. The new programmes approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) include Medicine, Physiology, Anatomy, English Language and Law.

Oguejiofor commended the Archbishop for his foresight in establishing such an institution which is a significant milestone in educational development in the region.

It also reflects a growing trend across Africa, where private and faith-based institutions are playing an increasing role in bridging educational gaps.

Against common trends in university education in Nigeria, Shanahan University seeks to revolutionise higher education by emphasising leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Speaking at the event, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, applauded the Catholic Church’s commitment to academic excellence and emphasised the importance of education as a transformative force.

Achebe, who noted that Shanahan University is the first university in Onitsha, expressed delight that it happened in his lifetime as the Obi of Onitsha.

He expressed optimism that students of the institution would come out in flying colours.

On his part, Chief Cletus Ibeto, chairman of the board of trustees, highlighted the mission of the college, which is to produce graduates who can succeed globally.
