Sexual Harassment: Senate Suspends Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan For Six Months

Natasha Denies Apologising To Senate As Constituents Submit Recall Petition

The Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The suspension was announced after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct found her guilty of violating the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended).

During the plenary session, Akpabio stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan had brought the presiding officer and the entire Nigerian Senate to public disrepute. He read out the committee’s recommendation, which called for her suspension.

Some senators attempted to reduce the suspension period to three months, but the upper chamber upheld the initial six-month penalty through a majority vote. Despite appeals, the chamber remained firm in its decision, reinforcing the importance of discipline and adherence to Senate rules.

However, there is a possibility that the suspension could be lifted or reduced if Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a formal apology. Akpabio stated that the Senate would reconsider her case if she issues a written apology expressing remorse.

Senator Escorted Out After Suspension

Following the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-At-Arms. Before leaving, she strongly criticised the decision, stating, This injustice would not be sustained. Her reaction indicates a potential challenge to the ruling, although no official appeal has been confirmed.

Implications of the Senate Decision

The suspension highlights the upper chamber stance on internal discipline and adherence to established rules. It also raises questions about the balance between parliamentary authority and individual rights within the legislative process. The decision may set a precedent for how similar disputes are handled in the future.

With the option of an apology open to Akpoti-Uduaghan, her next move will determine whether the suspension is reduced or upheld. For now, the upper chamber has reaffirmed its authority, making it clear that any violations of its rules will have consequences.
