Saudi Arabia To Host 2034 World Cup As Australia Withdraws Bid

Australia has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, signalling a significant shift in the race to secure the hosting rights. The decision came as the Asian Football Confederation threw its support behind Saudi Arabia, making it a strong contender to become the host nation.

Football Australia (FA) boss James Johnson had said the country was “exploring the possibility” of 2034, but on Tuesday the governing body said it would instead focus on bids for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup and the 2029 Club World Cup.

Saudi Arabia announced it would bid only minutes after soccer’s global governing body called for Asia and Oceania bids on Oct 4. With FIFA inviting bids from the Asia and Oceania regions, the prospect of hosting the World Cup remains open. Australia and New Zealand jointly hosted the Women’s World Cup in 2023, which garnered positive reviews.
