Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio were enough for Real Madrid as they beat city rivals Atletico in the Madrid derby on Sunday evening while title challengers Barcelona only managed to secure a 2-2 draw against Osasuna earlier.

Nico Gonzalez and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli scored but David Garcia and Ezequiel Avila earned Osasuna a point.

That result means that Barcelona are now five points behind Atletico Madrid in fourth.

For Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, they got ahead in the 19th minute through striker Karim Benzema who profited from a Vini Jnr assist. Marco Asensio then doubled Madrid’s lead with an exceptional finish in the 57th minute.

The defeat was the first of the season for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

Real Betis remained in third place by thrashing Real Sociedad 4-0.

Sevilla had stayed in second place with a 1-0 win over Athletic Club on Saturday.
