Political Heavyweights Visit El-Rufai, Call for Respect for Rule of Law

February 13, 2026

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi on Thursday paid separate solidarity visits to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai at his Abuja residence.

The visits followed the widely reported airport incident involving El-Rufai and security operatives earlier in the day.

Atiku, who arrived at the former governor’s residence late in the evening, described the development as troubling and warned against what he termed the misuse of state institutions in politically sensitive situations. In remarks shared after the meeting, the former vice president stressed the need to safeguard democratic norms and protect the rights of political actors, regardless of affiliation.

He reportedly characterised the situation as a “national embarrassment” and called for strict adherence to due process and the rule of law, noting that democratic institutions must not be weaponised.

Amaechi also visited El-Rufai in a separate show of solidarity. According to sources familiar with the meeting, the former Rivers State governor condemned what he described as intimidation and urged restraint in the handling of political disagreements.

Both leaders were said to have held private discussions with El-Rufai, focusing on the broader implications of the incident for Nigeria’s democracy and the role of security agencies in civil matters.

While no formal joint statement was issued after the visits, aides indicated that the meetings were aimed at demonstrating support for El-Rufai and reinforcing calls for institutional accountability.

The solidarity visits have since drawn political attention, with observers interpreting them as a significant alignment among key political figures amid evolving national dynamics.
