The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has called on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to lift the suspension of ValueJet’s captain and first officer, following last week’s disruption at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam1.

In a statement issued on Saturday, NAAPE President, Galadima Abednego, described the NCAA’s sanction as “premature” and called for “an open, transparent, and unbiased investigation” into the incident.

“We strongly condemn the crude, unruly behaviour and arrogant display by the passenger in question,” Abednego said. “While the pilot may have exercised better discretion, the primary fault in this matter does not lie with the crew.”

The pilots’ body urged the NCAA to immediately reinstate the suspended licences, stressing that the crew’s actions were aimed at maintaining safety and order. “It is imperative that disciplinary measures be fair and proportionate, taking into account the provocation faced by the flight crew,” Abednego added.

The Abuja incident occurred when Kwam1 reportedly disrupted boarding procedures after being asked to comply with standard security protocols. In an earlier response, the musician issued a public apology, stating: “I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience my actions may have caused the airline, the passengers, or the aviation authorities.”

The NCAA had suspended the captain and first officer pending investigation, a decision that sparked debate within the aviation industry. NAAPE’s intervention marks the latest in a series of calls from industry stakeholders for a review of the sanctions.
