Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye, aka Mr P of the defunct P-Square group, has advised people to speak out when boxed into a corner by ill treatment even from loved ones for the sake of their mental health.

Speaking in a recent interview with Cool FM, Lagos, Mr P revealed that he was forced to endure family related ill treatment for over 20 years all in a bid to avoid washing dirty linings in the public.

He, however noted that there is a limit to human endurance, adding that it is better to voice out and confront that which can crumble you than die in silence.

In a further post on his Instagram on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Peter advised that people should not drown in silence over ill treatment from family, stressing that he had to, for over two decades.

Mr P asserted that any family that steals, discriminates or ignores one’s pain is not a family, adding that his sanity matters and he is now prioritising his mental health.

He wrote: “Don’t let family be the reason you’re drowning in silence. I did – for over 20 years plus. And it almost cost me everything. But now I know better – love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray, and family doesn’t steal from you.

“Family that steals and breaks you isn’t family at all. Real family doesn’t drain you, shame you, discriminate against you, or ignore your pain.

“My sanity matters. My mental health is a priority. If it costs my mental health, then it’s too expensive.”

The outburst is not unconnected with the ongoing legal tussle between him and elder brother and former manager of the P-Square group Jude Okoye at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The big brother and former manager is standing trial for alleged money laundering and alleged diversion of royalties belonging to their defunct music group, P-Square

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Jude Okoye on a seven-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of ₦1.38 billion, $1 million, and £34,537.59, alongside his company, Northside Music Limited.

While the battle rages, fans of the original P-Square group continue to lament over the crashed ‘marriage’ with some insisting that they were unique and indeed have an indelible Unique Selling Point as a Group.

Mr P in addressing the issue however urged fans to come to terms with the change and respect their decisions, revealing that he and his brother Paul Okoye now known as Rudeboy, have indeed tried all the formula in the books to remain as duo, and it is not working.

He added that there is a joy that comes with a solo career.

“There’s a joy that comes with going solo. Please respect our decisions. We’ve tried it, it’s not working,” he said.

The energetic group that captured the entertainment industry not only with their songs but with captivating on stage performance first split in 2016 and reunited in 2021.

The industry and indeed lovers of the group were however shocked when in August last year Paul confirmed that the group has broken up again.

Amidst all the squabbles, break ups and legal tussle die-hard lovers of the group continue to predict that the break up is not for life.

A fan who told Primebusiness.africa on condition of anonymity said “I don’t believe in Mr.P or Rudeboy, because they sound strange to me. I believe and love P-Square as a group and I think the break up is not for life. Are they going to remain enemies for life? he queried adding Twins for that matter, imagine!
