Nigerian banking titan Jim Ovia has stepped down as Group Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, drawing the curtain on a leadership run that spans more than three decades from founder to boardroom head, Prime Business Africa reports.
The bank confirmed his retirement on Tuesday at its 35th Annual General Meeting, citing the expiration of his tenure in line with corporate governance limits set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Ovia, who founded Zenith Bank in 1990 and served as its chief executive for two decades before transitioning to chairman in 2014, exits after hitting the 12-year cap for non-executive directors and board chairs under CBN regulations.

In a swift succession move, the bank named Mustafa Bello, a long-serving non-executive director, as the new Group Chairman.
The transition underscores tightening regulatory enforcement in Nigeria’s banking sector, where tenure limits are increasingly shaping boardroom turnover among legacy institutions. It also marks the end of an era for Zenith Bank, widely regarded as one of the country’s most consistently profitable lenders, built under Ovia’s founding vision and sustained through his influence at both executive and board levels.
While the bank framed the exit as orderly and compliant, Ovia’s departure signals a broader generational shift at the top tier of Nigeria’s financial industry, where founding figures are gradually yielding control under stricter governance standards.
