Oscars 2024: Emma Stone Wins Best Actress

At the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Emma Stone clinched the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in “Poor Things,” a period fantasy comedy adapted from Alasdair Gray’s novel.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and featuring Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef, Stone’s performance resonated deeply, earning her the prestigious accolade.

Her portrayal in the surrealist fantasy “Poor Things,” where a deceased woman is revived using her child’s brain, puts a unique spin on the Frankenstein narrative. Initially seeming to cater to male fantasies of infantilized women, Stone’s performance deftly subverts these expectations, delivering a frenetic and unnervingly direct portrayal.

Previously honoured with the same award for her role in the musical “La La Land,” Stone’s win cements her status as a versatile and accomplished actress.

During the ceremony, past winners Michelle Yeoh, Sally Field, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron, and Jessica Lange joined her onstage to present the award.
