Olukoyede Tasks Lawmakers on Accountability, Good Governance

August 22, 2025

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on legislators to place accountability and good governance at the center of their work.

Olukoyede made the call in Abuja on Thursday, during the Policy Dialogue and Public Unveiling of the 10th National Assembly’s Deliberative Barometer and Policy Focus Productivity Report, themed “Legislative Governance, Accountability and Productivity Index.” The event was organized by the Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation (ERGAF-Africa) in collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC).

Represented by the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Commander CE Wilson Uwujaren, Olukoyede urged the organizers and legislators to pay closer attention to accountability in governance, noting that the report and discussions appeared silent on that aspect. He, however, commended the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward addressing pressing governance issues.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Hon. Cyril Hart, emphasized the need to constantly raise the standard of representation, lawmaking, and oversight. He said the barometer aligns with the vision of the 10th Assembly to entrench evidence-based lawmaking and ensure that legislators respond to data that can strengthen democratic processes and enhance national development.

Professor Abubakar Suleiman, Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, also praised the initiative for providing credible data to evaluate the activities of the legislature. He noted that accurate data, combined with artificial intelligence, would drive transparency and accountability in governance.

Delivering a goodwill message, Hon. Bamidele Salam described leadership as “taking people to where they should be” and stressed that citizens are more concerned with the dividends of democracy and the fulfillment of lawmakers’ mandates. He urged government support to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.

The emphasis on accountability comes at a time when public trust in governance remains low and Nigerians are increasingly demanding transparency from elected officials. Stakeholders say the new barometer could serve as a tool for measuring legislative impact, helping to close the gap between lawmakers and citizens while strengthening democratic accountability.
