Ogidi Reels from Fatal Attack on Town Union President-General

February 7, 2026

Residents of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State are reeling from shock after the President-General of the town union, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, and another unidentified man were killed in a violent late-evening attack on Friday, February 6, Prime Business Africa reports.

The shootings took place at Ogidi School Field, a well-known public gathering space, sparking fear and prompting many residents to stay indoors. Local sources say the attack may have been a reprisal by cultists following the recent arrest and death of a notorious gang leader in the area.

Confirming the incident, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, stated:

Residents expressed growing concern over the wave of cult-related violence in the area. A source from nearby Abatete, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:

“These attacks are becoming a serious threat to community leaders. Two years ago, the President-General of Umuoji Town Union was killed, and there were previous attempts on the PG of Abatete. Life seems to mean nothing to these gunmen.”

The Anambra Police assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to restore security and prevent further attacks. Officers continue to investigate the circumstances of the killings, appealing to residents to cooperate by providing any information that could aid the investigation.

Ogidi, known as the hometown of literary icon Chinua Achebe, has in recent years witnessed sporadic attacks linked to cultist activities, often targeting prominent figures in the community.

The latest killings have once again heightened anxiety and underscored the urgent need for stronger security measures.

As the community mourns, authorities are expected to provide updates on progress in the investigation and any arrests made in connection with the attack.
