Prime Business Africa had reported that Okupe, who was a politician and physician, died at the age of 72.

In a statement on his verified X handle, Obi said he received the news of Okupe’s passing with great sadness, adding that it is a big loss not only to his family and loved ones but everybody in the country.

He described Okupe as a man who greatly desired a better Nigeria.

“With great sadness this morning, I received the shocking news of the death of my dear elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe. On behalf of the family and the Obidient family, I sincerely mourn his passing.

“Dr. Okupe was an active figure in the nation’s political space and a man who desired a better Nigeria. His death is a profound loss – not only to his family and loved ones but to all of us,” Obi stated.

Okupe also served as the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation in the build up to the 2023 general election but resigned after his case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Federal High Court, Abuja where he was found guilty of some charges bordering on money laundering in December 2022.

He left the party in January 2024, close to one year after the 2023 presidential election.

Obi prayed to God to grant Okupe eternal rest and grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

He also urged members of the Obidient Movement, a group supporting his presidential ambition, to pray for the eternal repose of Okupe.

“I would therefore like to urge members of the Obidient Movement and other groups to pray for the eternal repose of Dr. Okupe’s soul and to remember his family during these trying times,” Obi added.
