The 2025 NLNG Science Quiz Competition held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State under the theme “Renewable Energy Solutions,” drew students from across the state.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelAccording to a statement signed by Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, Manager, Corporate Communication and Public Affairs, NLNG, eight schools in Rivers State participated in the final round of the Science Quiz Competition held on Saturday, with Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, emerging the champion.
“After rounds of intense intellectual display, Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, emerged as the winner in the Senior Secondary (SS 2) category,” the statement said.
Competition was organized in three phases comprising the Championship, Science Project Exhibition, and Grand Finale. The school that clinched the championship, “distinguished itself through accuracy, composure, and a strong grasp of science concepts related to clean energy,” the statement said.
In the Science Project Exhibition, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School, Oginigba, secured the top position, followed by Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) in second place, and Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, in third place.
The competition ended at the Championship stage in the Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) category.

After a fiercely contested contest between peers from all over Rivers State, Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana, took first place, followed by Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor, in second place, and Government Secondary School, Abua, in third.
The remaining finalists in the competition included Government Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor (5th), Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt (6th), Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana (7th), Government Secondary School, Abua (8th), and Government Secondary School, Eneka (4th) were the remaining finalists in the competition.
NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Sophia Horsfall, who spoke at the end of the quiz competition, emphasized the company’s dedication to fostering scientific excellence and advancing sustainability.
She noted that as the world is transitioning to greener and cleaner form of energy, NLNG is pleased to be at the forefront of this change, by delivering LPG to Nigerian homes and exporting LNG, a cleaner fossil fuel.
“Through this quiz, we are not only investing in education, but inspiring the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow,” she stated.
Horsfall further stated that because of the pivotal role of science, which she described as “the heartbeat of progress,” the company has continued to invest in supporting platforms that promotes it, where young minds can engage and discover their potential.
She disclosed that since the science quiz competition began, over 200 public schools have benefited from it.

Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, who was represented by Tam Job Inisefiekabo, stated that the theme was both timely and significant, given the global community’s challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and energy insecurity.
Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), stressed the importance of preparing young people with the knowledge, skills, and creativity needed to drive innovation and long-term progress.
The NLNG Science Quiz Competition, which was first introduced in 2008 and relaunched in 2020 following a six-year hiatus for process improvement, is still evolving. The addition of the Science Projects Fair a year ago has provided an opportunity for students to present practical solutions to pressing scientific and environmental challenges, deepening their involvement in STEM.
The quiz competition, organized in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education, the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (Rivers State Chapter), and Dragnet Solutions Limited, has become a shining example of excellence in science education.
