Nigerians risk losing their jobs in Tesla, as the electric carmaker suspends hiring across its companies globally. The pause on job hire within Tesla was ordered by its Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk.
The world’s richest man sent the directive to executives at the company, informing them of his intention to downsize the current workforce of Tesla. As at the end of 2021, the automaker and its subsidiaries had over 99,000 full time workers.
According to an email received by Tesla executives, Musk wants to cut 10% of the workforce. This means over 9,000 employees at the firm will lose their jobs before the year runs out, if the CEO goes ahead with the job cut.
Last time Tesla downsized ita workforce in 2017, engineers, managers and factory workers were among the hundreds of workers sacked.
The email was titled, “pause all hiring worldwide”, according to Reuters, and it reveals Musk expressing concerns about the United States economy, which he had, in the past, stated could fall into recession, just a year after exiting the negative impact of coronavirus on GDP.
Musk isn’t the only CEO worried about the US economy, as chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, had also hinted of an economic hurricane, that could sweep away jobs in America.
The impending job loss in Tesla, follows Musk’s threat to top executives still operating work-from-home policy. He expressed his displeasure about remote work, stating that he has had enough of it.
He directed Tesla executivea to resume to the office or resign from their position. According to the leaked email conveying the threat, the founder said he would personally review requests from employees to work remotely, and approval will be given to workers with exceptional contributions to the operation.
The billionaire also suggested that persons interested in working from home must have done a minimum of 40hours in the office. In his explanation for the decision, Musk said Tesla building should be a full time office, not a stop by.
