August 5, 2025

In a moment of global pride for Nigeria, 17-year-old Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, a student from Yobe State, made history by emerging as the world’s best in English language skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London.

Nafisa stunned the international community by outperforming over 20,000 participants from 69 countries, clinching the coveted top spot at the prestigious global competition, often referred to as the “Olympics of English.” The event tests reading comprehension, writing, verbal articulation, and critical thinking through rigorous academic and creative challenges.

Representing Nigeria with grace and brilliance, Nafisa’s triumph is not only a personal milestone but also a landmark moment for Northern Nigeria, where access to education especially for girls remains challenged by insecurity and socioeconomic limitations.

In a moving acceptance speech that left judges visibly impressed, Nafisa declared:

“This victory is not mine alone; it belongs to every girl in Nigeria who dreams beyond her circumstances. I hope this inspires other young people to believe in the power of language, education, and courage.”

The news of her victory has gone viral, sparking celebrations across the country and beyond. Hashtags such as #NafisaTheEagle, #PrideOfYobe, and #NigeriaToTheWorld continue to trend on Nigerian social media.

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, called on the Federal Government to reward Nafisa’s achievement with a cash prize of $100,000, a residential flat, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

“I call on our government to appreciate her with at least a flat, $100,000, and a national honour (OON). This will encourage our younger ones to do more, particularly our girls,” Prof. Pantami said in a post via his verified social media handle.

He emphasized that a gesture of such magnitude would inspire not only Nafisa but also countless other students striving to excel despite limited opportunities.

As of the time of this report, the Federal Government has not officially responded to the call or announced any reward package for Nafisa.

With Nigeria continuing to grapple with education system reforms and learning gaps, Nafisa Abdullah Aminu’s victory offers a timely and hopeful reminder of what can be achieved when talent is nurtured and when a girl from Yobe dares to dream beyond borders.
