Nigeria Wins Permanent Seat on African Central Bank Board at AU Summit

February 13, 2026

Nigeria has secured a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank, marking a major diplomatic and institutional victory for the country at the 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the session, which concluded this week, also extended Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, the body set up as a precursor to the African Central Bank. Officials described the decision as recognition of Nigeria’s economic clout, technical capacity, and leadership role in driving Africa’s monetary integration agenda.

“The landmark developments underscore Nigeria’s strategic position in shaping the continent’s financial architecture,” the ministry said in a statement.

In addition to its financial achievements, Nigeria played a central role in advancing peace and security. Candidates agreed upon by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) were successfully elected to the AU Peace and Security Council, reflecting strong regional cohesion and a shared commitment to stability across Africa.

Nigeria also showcased leadership in promoting democratic governance through a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The event drew ministers, senior government officials, and delegates from across Africa and the international community, focusing on strengthening democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and collaborative regional approaches to upholding democratic values.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, described the outcomes as reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the AU’s ideals of economic integration, institutional development, peace, security, and democratic governance. He added that the Federal Government remains dedicated to working with member states and regional bodies to advance Africa’s shared prosperity and sustainable development.
