Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Religious Tolerance, Counters U.S. Concerns on Freedom

November 1, 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reacted to the recent statement by the United States on religious freedom, saying the country remains unwavering in its commitment to protect all citizens and confront violent extremism threatening national unity and regional stability.

In a statement released on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria “has noted” Washington’s comments, while reaffirming its dedication to defending every Nigerian regardless of faith, ethnicity, or belief.

“We remain committed in our resolve to tackle the violent extremism that is fueled by special interests who have helped drive such decay and division in countries across the intersecting West African and Sahel regions,” the statement read.

The ministry also paid tribute to the victims of religiously motivated violence and commended Nigeria’s security forces for their continued sacrifice. “We mourn all the victims of violent extremism and salute our armed forces as they continue to fight against vicious but cowardly foes,” it said.

Reasserting Nigeria’s religious and cultural pluralism, the ministry described the country as “a God-fearing nation that values faith, tolerance, diversity, and inclusion,” adding that these principles align with the rules-based international order to which Nigeria remains committed.

Despite the U.S. remarks, the government emphasized the strength of bilateral relations between both nations, noting that Nigeria considers the U.S. a “close and enduring ally.”

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Tinubu, will maintain its steadfast commitment to genuine peace, stability, freedom, and democracy, values shared with all our partners around the world,” the statement concluded.

The Statement was signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
