Residents of  Nibo community in  Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, have raised the alarm over what they described as poor construction of a road in the area.

This followed a viral footage showing cracks on a part of the road still under construction. The video, widely circulated on social media, sparked outrage among residents who questioned the integrity of the project being executed by a local construction firm.

“How can a road be cracking and collapsing while construction is still on?” a concerned resident asked in the video, expressing surprise over what they perceive as substandard work.

Many in the community have accused the contractor of using inferior materials, calling on the state government to probe the ongoing construction work. “This is taxpayers’ money. We deserve accountability and quality,” Mr Chiemeka, a resident, said.

President-General of Nibo Town Union, Prof. Tony Nwokoye, seemingly downplayed the public outcry about the quality of work being done on the road.

In response to Prime Business Africa’s inquiry on the matter, Nwokoye said: “There is no problem, work is in progress.”

The President-General’s reaction to the road project sharply contrasts with the general perception of the public on the quality of work being done by the contractor.

His comment suggests that the town’s leadership has confidence in the contractor’s ability to deliver the project, despite public fears.

In a chat with Prime Business Africa, the contractor handling the road project, Mr. Okey  Nwankwo of J Quarison International Ltd,  dismissed the viral footage as politically motivated. He said work has barely started on the part of the road being faulted.

“Water is a universe solvent, when you drill and don’t protect it immediately with asphalt there is bound to be such cracks which is what we are working on and the point that was faulted,  work has barely started on it,” he explained.

“The job hasn’t been tagged completed or commissioned, as we are still on site and work is ongoing so why the drama? There are points on that road that have been completed but they won’t show you that. These are lies from individuals targeting me and the party I support indirectly, under the guise of pointing out loopholes.”

In a press release signed by Mr. Nwankwo, a former President-General of Nibo Union (2008–2014), he reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering a quality road in accordance with contract specifications.

“We are currently executing asphalt works and, upon completion, will inspect and repair all failed sections of the old drains constructed in 2017, as clearly stipulated in the contract,” part of the statement reads.

“The thickness of our asphalt is exactly as specified in the agreement.”

He described the backlash as part of “divisive village politics” tied to grievances from his time as a community leader, insisting that the site remains a “work in progress.” He further expressed gratitude to the Anambra State Government for funding the road and pledged the project would be completed before the end of July 2025.

The contractor urged the members of the public to stay off the site until construction is fully completed.
