The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed the appointment of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro as the new head coach of the Super Eagles following the sacking of Franco-German Gernot Rohr.

Peseiro, the former Venezuela coach who was in charge of the South American team at the 2020 Copa America that was held in the summer of 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic that swept away the sporting calendar of last year will only be at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as an observer.

The executive committee of the NFF revealed that interim head coach Austin Eguavoen will be in charge of the team at the AFCON but revert back to his previous role as the Technical Director of the Federation after his Nations Cup assignment.

The Portuguese coach was reportedly a recommendation to the Technical and Development sub-committe of the Football Federation by former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho who is now the gaffer at Serie A side As Roma.

The Eagles will depart for  the tournament on January 5 albeit a few players will join the rest in Cameroon from their respective bases.
