NBBF Crisis: Buhari Withdraws Nigeria From International Basketball

Following the crisis that has rocked the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) with two rival elections held in Benin City and Abuja on 31 January 2022, producing factional winners, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday has consequently withdrawn Nigeria from any international competitions for two years, reports Prime Business Africa.

The Nigeria women’s basketball national team D’Tigress are billed to participate at this year’s FIBA Women’s World Cup in in Australia from 22 September to 1 October, 2022 and will miss the tournament unless an amicable resolution is found before the tournament begins.

Some basketball players led a protest to the office of the Youth and Sports minister, Sunday Dare in Abuja on Tueday accusing the minister of ineptitude in handling the problems facing the game in Nigeria.

 

The President’s pronouncement came as the intractable crises have hampered the development of basketball in the country with two regimes having emerged in the NBBF board.

President Buhari’s order was made known today by the permanent secretary of Federal Ministry Of Youth And Sports Development, Ismaila Abubakar.
