Man United Beats Man City, Brighton Thrash Liverpool

January 14, 2023

Manchester United on Saturday fought back to claim a dramatic 2-1 win against Manchester City and are now just one place behind their city rivals as the battle for the Premier League title and Champions League places hot up.

With just 12 minutes left on the clock at Old Trafford, United were trailing thanks to Jack Grealish’s 60th minute header in the season’s second Manchester derby.

The United win however did not come without some controversial issues bothering on VAR’s review of an offside situation.

City were looking to close the gap on Arsenal who play north London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola and his players were left fuming over a controversial VAR decision to allow Bruno Fernandes restore parity before Marcus Rashford scored a late winner eight minutes to full time when he pounced on a Casemiro pass.

Marcus Rashford was clearly offside when he ran onto a through ball but Fernandes ran past him to fire home.

Although the goal was initially disallowed, it was eventually allowed to stand after a VAR check because Rashford didn’t touch the ball before Fernandes scored.

Liverpool, missing some of their key players fell to a shock 3-0 defeat at Brighton in one of the 3pm kickoffs.

At Goodison Park, Everton welcomed Southampton but it was not a good evening for Frank Lampard as the Toffees lost 2-1 to the Saints.

There were boos and jeers for Lampard after the final whistle who has come under intense pressure in recent months over inconsistent results.

Banners were displayed at the stadium on Saturday with disappointed fans calling for new owners after promises made to them were not fulfilled.

As at the time of filing this report, Brentford and Bournemouth are playing out a scoreless draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.
