Manchester City have reached an agreement in principle to extend the contract of forward Phil Foden after a meeting with his representatives according to reports by leading English media outfits.
The England international scored a hat-trick in Sunday’s Manchester derby in the 6-3 beating of Manchester United along with Erling Haaland.
Foden has faced a tumultuous time at City with injury setbacks and controversy over his amorous relationship with a young lady which he got involved in company of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
Foden’s career has seemingly took a turn for the better with promising displays and he has put in good shifts that has prompted the City hierarchy to consider a new deal.
To that effect, talks have been held with final details on his image rights the only thing left on the agenda.
Reports in the British newspapers hint that preliminary discussions over a new contract for the former youth international began in September.
Foden who won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017 with England is almost guaranteed a place in the Three Lions’ flight to Qatar in November if fit and in form.
Foden’s continued stay in City could mean lack of first team opportunities for fellow England international Jack Grealish who might receive offers from other clubs in the winter transfer window in January or later in the summer.
City are second in the English Premier League table with 18 points from eight matches, three points adrift of Arsenal who defeated north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at the Emirates Saturday lunch time.
Foden was used sometimes in previous seasons as a ‘false nine’ in the absence of a conventional, traditional number 9 striker.
However the arrival of Haaland from Borussia Dortmund has changed the narrative and goals are abound for the club who are keen to defend their title.
