Mojisola Meranda, who was recently sworn in as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has resigned following ongoing crisis in the assembly.

Meranda’s resignation on Monday paved the way for the return of Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached by the Assembly members in January 2025.

Meranda, who served as the 10th Speaker of the State House of Assembly for just 49 days, was immediately nominated and sworn in as deputy speaker while Obasa was reinstated as Speaker.

She received commendation from the state lawmakers for her performance, diligence, and legislative acumen throughout her brief tenure in office.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was voted out as Lagos Assembly Speaker over alleged misconduct and sundry offenses.

The removal led to crisis in the assembly as Obasa rejected it, claiming that due process was not followed.

He had also gone to court to seek reversal of his impeachment.

With the resignation of Meranda and Obasa’s subsequent reinstatement, the crisis seems to have been resolved.

Before the commencement of plenary on Monday, Obasa, Meranda and other state lawmakers held a closed-door meeting outside the Assembly complex.

Prime Business Africa gathered that leaders of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, the state Attorney General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), were also at the meeting.

Analysts believe that the assembly’s leadership crisis points to the behind-the-scenes maneuvering within the state’s political establishment.

House Adjourns Indefinitely

Speaking after his reinstatement, Obasa expressed his gratitude to all those who played significant roles in resolving the crisis, which led to his return including former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, ex-governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, and the leaders of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC).

He thanked the state Attorney General, and other party leaders, including the state party chairman for their support.  He appreciated fellow lawmakers, including Meranda, for their support and loyalty.

The house adjourned sitting indefinitely.
