La Liga: Real Madrid Beat Sociedad In Emotional Farewell Game For Ancelotti, Modric

May 24, 2025

Kylian Mbappe scored a brace Saturday evening as Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in manager Carlo Ancelotti’s final game in charge of the team.

The game was also the last for 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric albeit in the La Liga as he is part of the club’s plans for the FIFA Club World Cup in USA.

Ancelotti joined the 15-time European champions for a second spell in 2021 but will be stepping down for a new challenge as he is billed to take charge of the Brazil men’s national team beginning from May 26.

Ancelotti won 15 titles in charge of the Spanish giants and deservedly had a banner with a glowing tribute to him displayed at the stadium.

Modric on his part went off to a huge ovation from the appreciative fan base towards the end of the game and was warmly embraced on the sidelines by another Real Madrid legend, Toni Kroos who retired from the game last summer.

Barcelona are already confirmed as La Liga champions but Mbappe once again had a brilliant individual performance as he is now in the frame to win the European Golden Shoe award.

The France international of Cameroonian descent has now scored 11 goals in his last six matches.

Mbappe missed a penalty earlier but was on target in the 38th minute from the penalty spot.

The former AS Monaco forward then doubled his team’s lead with seven minutes to full time.

Mbappe now leads Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski by six goals in the Spanish topflight.

Across Europe, Mohamed Salah would need to score three more goals to surpass Mbappe to win the prize for the best marksman in European club football.

Barcelona will face Athletic Bilbao in their last game of the season on Sunday evening.

All La Liga games on Sunday kick off at 6pm Nigerian time.
