Kenya’s Election: Key Electoral Officials Reject Presidential Result

At a press conference earlier today, four key officials of the Kenya Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) declared that they had no part in the result of the presidential election declared by the chairman of the electoral body Wafula Chebukati.

The commissioners, including vice chair, Juliana Cherera, Commissioners Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang’aya, while speaking at Serena Hotel in Nairobi Kenya, alleged that the results were not transparent and so, did not receive their endorsement.

“We cannot take ownership of the result that is going to be announced because of the opaque nature of this last phase of the general election,” said Juliana Cherera, the vice-chairperson of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“We are going to give a comprehensive statement… and again we urge Kenyans to keep calm,” she added.

This came minutes before the electoral body chairman announced the results.

After the election result was announced, William Ruto declared winner of the election, there was chaos between supporters of Mr. Raila Odinga and that of Ruto which led to fisticuffs.

Mr. Ruto narrowly won his rival, Raila Odinga, as he scored 50.4 per cent of the total votes cast.

Announcement of the result of the election held on August 9 across the country was delayed.
