Kano Residents Protest Abolition of Emirate Council

The tension in Kano since Thursday seems to be reaching a crescendo point as residents of Gaya, Rano, and Karaye on Sunday embarked on protest against the scrapping of four emirates by the state government.

Gaya, Bichi, Rano and Karaye Emirates councils were dissolved on Thursday after the Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday, passed the Emirate Council amendment bill that repealed the 2019 version that had provided for the establishment of five Emirates in Kano.

The new law which was subsequently signed by the state governor, Abba Yusuf, revoked the one used by Abdullahi Ganduje administration to create additional four emirates in the state and subsequent dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Governor Yusuf had after signing the new law, ordered the emirs of the affected emirates to hand over to Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Gwarzo, who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Videos shared online showed residents of the towns where the emirates are located protesting on the streets with placards against the action of the state government.

In some of the videos, some protesters were seen setting fire on the with tyres on the road, demonstrating their support for the deposed Emir, Ado Bayero.

Emir Bayero, who returned to Kano on Saturday morning, rejected his dethronement, citing an order of the Federal High Court restraining the state government from implementing the new law.

He however called for calm, saying he awaits outcome of the court decision.
