Jonathan: PDP Remains Alive, Strong Ahead of 2027

January 6, 2026

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has dismissed claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is weakened or near collapse, insisting that the party remains alive, strong and resilient despite its current internal challenges.

Jonathan made the remarks on Tuesday evening, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) at his private office in Abuja.

He described the PDP as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic evolution, noting that it is the only surviving original political party formed ahead of the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999.

According to the former President, the party’s long history, institutional depth and national spread position it to overcome present difficulties and remain a key player in Nigeria’s political future.

“The PDP, being the only surviving original political party since 1998, has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999. I am a major beneficiary of this party, which gave me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President and President. I am deeply grateful and will continue to contribute my quota because I feel indebted to the party,” Jonathan said.

He urged the party’s leadership to put national interest, unity and institutional growth above personal ambitions, stressing that a strong opposition and vibrant political parties are vital to democratic stability.

Jonathan also described the PDP as more than a political organisation, but a national institution that has helped shape Nigeria’s governance and democratic culture over the years.

Earlier, PDP National Chairman, Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, said the visit was part of ongoing high-level consultations aimed at reconciling aggrieved members and repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Turaki thanked Jonathan for his consistent loyalty to the PDP and his role as a stabilising figure within the party, assuring him that the current leadership is committed to a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” focused on internal cohesion, party rebuilding and electoral competitiveness.

“Our objective is to reunite the party, return power to the people and reposition the PDP as the platform that truly represents the aspirations of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging all stakeholders because only a united PDP can offer a credible alternative for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.

Members of the NWC delegation included former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu; Prof. Jerry Gana; Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd); Hajiya Zainab Maina; Chief Mike Oghiadome; former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN; and other senior party officials.
