JAPA: American-Based Photographer To Educate Nigerians On The Impact Of Migration

American-based photographer Izu Okwuobasi is set to unveil a thought-provoking solo exhibition titled Obodo Oyinbo: The Million Mile Experience’. shedding light on migration and its profound impacts, especially among Nigeria’s youth grappling with the ‘Japa syndrome’.

Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 16 and 17, the exhibition promises a multi-dimensional perspective, offering an intimate portrayal of America through the lens of a Nigerian artist.

Describing the significance of the exhibition, Izu expressed, “This platform is pivotal for me as an artist and photographer. Succeeding here means establishing recognition for my distinct narrative, intertwining the journey of Nigerian immigrants with my odyssey through America.”

“True success, for me, would be visitors forging deep connections with the stories behind my exhibition – comprehending the immigrant experience and encountering the ‘real America’ from my perspective.”

Highlighting the exhibition’s target audience, Izu emphasized its appeal to travel enthusiasts and individuals intrigued by emigration and the Nigerian diaspora’s narrative. “We intend to engage those involved in the ‘Japa’ movement, creating a space for reflection on the phenomenon of seeking better prospects abroad,” he stated.

Moreover, the exhibition aims to captivate older generations, particularly those enamored by art, travel, and narratives exploring the Nigerian diaspora’s experiences overseas.

The showcase will feature the artist’s compelling photographs and interviews conducted by Izu with Nigerian immigrants, including figures like Speed Darlington, allowing them to share their stories within the context of ‘Obodo Oyinbo’ (foreign land).
