Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed deep concern over the depreciating naira, urging Nigerians to unite for economic recovery.
In a speech in Abuja, he lamented, “It is not only disheartening and disenchanting but also heartbreaking that yesterday when the naira plummeted to N1500 to the dollar.”
Shettima criticized those reveling in the currency’s decline, stating, “Instead of us to coagulate into a single force and salvage our nation’s economy, sadly, some clowns are celebrating on Twitter of an impending implosion of the Nigerian economy.”
The Vice President’s remarks come in the wake of the naira’s 42% crash against the US dollar in just two days, reaching an unprecedented low of N1,482.57 per US dollar on Tuesday. This alarming trend, as reported by FMDQ, signifies a 9% or 133.94 loss compared to Monday’s closing rate of N1,348.63.
Shettima reiterated the need for unity, stating, “Nigerians should have come together to work towards recovering the country’s economy.” The economic challenges faced by the nation call for collective efforts rather than divisive reactions.
As the nation grapples with this economic setback, Shettima’s call to action serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of solidarity in overcoming challenges, urging citizens to prioritize national interest over divisive celebrations in the face of adversity.
