Less than four days to the governorship and State Assemblies elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Sokoto State, Dr. Nura Ali.

This was revealed in a letter with no INEC/SCE/442/V.II addressed to the Resident Electoral Commissioner and the Administrative Secretary in the state.

According to the letter, Dr Ali’s suspension takes immediate effect.  He was asked to stay away from the Commission’s office in Sokoto State until further notice, while the administrative secretary,  Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa is directed to take full charge of all activities including the pending election.

He Kangiwa is mandated to take over with immediate effect until the Commission directs otherwise.

“This is to inform you of the commission’s decision for you (Dr Nura Ali), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State, to stay away from the commission’s office in Sokoto state immediately until furthermore notice.

“The administrative secretary is directed to take full charge of INEC, Sokoto State office with immediate effects,” part of the letter read.

The INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, had last Saturday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja, said that any electoral officers found to have compromised in the last election would be removed from working in the forthcoming election and subsequently punished by a disciplinary committee to be raised by the Commission.
