INEC Investigates Over-voting In Edo Election

Following series of complaints online, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is investigating cases of over-voting in the 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

Prime Business Africa reports that there were complaints raised by citizens over alleged cases of over-voting in parts of Edo State on Saturday.

In a statement via its X handle on Saturday night, INEC said it has received two major complaints of over-voting in the Edo election and vowed to deal with it.

“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to an allegation of wrong figures entered into polling unit result sheets in the ongoing Edo State Governorship election.

“This is the second complaint we have received out of the 4,519 polling units used for the election.

“The Commission will immediately investigate the matter and deal with any proven infraction,” INEC stated.

One of the cases is Osholo Primary School, Osholo polling unit, Weppa ward in Etsako East Local Government Area where INEC accredited 213 voters out of 493 registered voters, but recorded 406 votes.

In the result sheet sighted by Prime Business Africa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 352 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 52 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Labour Party had one vote each.

Many citizens had called the attention of INEC to the case online including former aviation minister, who is currently the Chancellor of Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership in Nigeria.

Collation of results have been going on since voting ended in all the 4,519 polling units across 18 LGAs of the state on Saturday.
