The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the legal basis for the dates announced for the 2027 General Election, following public concerns over their alignment with certain nationally recognised holidays and observance, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a press release issued Friday, the Commission said the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls were developed in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and its 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.
According to INEC, its Regulations and Guidelines in force since 2019 clearly stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections must hold on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to take place two weeks later.

However, the Commission acknowledged that stakeholders had raised concerns about the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain national holidays and observances, which they fear could affect voter turnout and participation.
INEC assured the public that it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections.
The electoral body disclosed that it is currently undertaking consultations on the matter and may, where necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the issues raised, provided that any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.
Reaffirming its commitment to credible polls, the Commission reiterated its dedication to transparency, inclusivity and the smooth conduct of the 2027 General Election.
The statement was signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to keeping Nigerians informed as consultations continue and decisions are taken regarding the 2027 electoral timetable.
